Our Best Tips to Sleep Cool This Summer

The dog days of summer are upon us. The soaring daytime temperatures mean it's warmer at night too, which can really impact your sleep. A good, restful night of sleep is dependent on a cool body temperature and a comfortable environment. Here are our tips to stay cool while you snooze this summer.

Cool Down Before Bed

When the weather is especially hot and sticky, it's important to set yourself up for a good night of sleep before your head even hits the pillow. You can do this by:

  • Taking a lukewarm shower or bath to lower your body temperature
  • Using a frozen washcloth as a cold compress on your head or neck
  • Avoiding exercise, heavy meals, and alcohol too close to bedtime
  • Keeping a glass of ice water next to your bed in case you get warm overnight
  • Putting an ice pack on pulse points, like your elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists

All of these things will lower your body temperature and help you get a better night of sleep.

Sleep in the Right Environment

The environment of your bedroom is extremely important to how well you sleep at night. If you have a ceiling fan, make sure the blades are set to rotate counterclockwise, which will create airflow to cool the room down. If you have a box fan, position it to face out the window to push the warm air out. Keep blinds or curtains closed at night to block out any light from outside. You can also invest in blackout curtains to keep your room as dark and as cool as possible.

Sleep on the Right Mattress

If you find that you sweat when you sleep, your mattress could be to blame. If you're like the 32% of adults in the U.S. who sleep on spring mattresses, it might be time to investigate a different, cooler, option. A memory foam mattress can be made with features like gel-infused foam or plant-based foam that has natural cooling properties. Some are also made with ultra-breathable material to maximize airflow. Take a trip to your local mattress store and test out a few models and feel the difference memory foam can make.

To enhance the coolness of your mattress even more, the mattress store will also offer pillows, sheets, and mattress covers that are specially made to provide a soothing, cooler sleep surface.
