This Isn't a One-Time Problem
The Kesyup recall follows a bigger conversation in the mattress industry.
About a year ago, Leggett & Platt, a major supplier of mattress components, went public with what it called a safety crisis. The company had bought low-cost imported mattresses online and sent them to an independent lab for open-flame testing. Seven of the eight mattresses failed. Some reached dangerous heat levels within two to four minutes of ignition. Leggett's CEO warned that a fire that fast could make escape from a room impossible.
Leggett's estimate: around 400,000 mattresses from the five brands it tested were sold on Amazon between 2024 and mid-2025. Most came from third-party sellers.
Now, a fair note. Leggett sells parts to mattress makers, so it has a stake in this fight. But the International Sleep Products Association, the industry's trade group, backed the call for tougher enforcement. And the CPSC's own recalls and warnings tell the same story.
One more detail worth knowing: Leggett's CEO said that in some cases the mattresses had no flame-retardant protection at all. He also pointed out that these low-price imports often end up in guest rooms and kids' bedrooms.
What the Federal Standard Actually Does
Every mattress sold in the United States must pass the CPSC's open-flame standard, known as 16 CFR Part 1633. It's been the law since July 1, 2007. Its purpose is simple: slow a mattress fire down so families have time to get out.
